Wukir Suryadi is an Indonesian experimental musician, composer and instrument builder, born in Malang, East Java, in 1977. He began his artistic practice at the age of twelve, creating music for theatre productions and poetry performances. His work brings together Javanese musical traditions, contemporary improvisation, sonic experimentation and his theatrical background. He designs and constructs his own instruments from bamboo, metal and found materials, treating instrument-making as an integral part of the creative process.

Suryadi gained international recognition as one half of Senyawa, the duo he co-founded with vocalist Rully Shabara. The project combines elements of Indonesian musical traditions with the radical language of contemporary experimental music. Suryadi’s self-built instruments allow him to create rhythmic, melodic and percussive layers simultaneously. His performances have a distinctly physical and theatrical quality, moving fluidly from focused, meditative passages to intense, almost trance-like climaxes.

Suryadi continues to develop his musical language through collaborations with artists from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds. In his practice, an instrument is not merely a tool but also an artistic object and a vehicle for ideas—a means of exploring relationships between material, body, tradition, technology and sound. His recent solo releases include T I T I R and Institutionalized Ritual, both released in March 2026.
