kIRk: Canes of Karabakh (PL)

Post-rock stories told with duduk, ambient landscapes reminiscent of the peaks of Nagorno-Karabakh. Canes of Karabakh is a project by Stanisław Matys (duduk), Olgierd Dokalski (flugelhorn, fx), and Paweł Bartnik (dub).
The formation of the group is closely linked to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. As a result of Armenia’s defeat in the war, the availability and quality of the gamish mouthpieces used by Matys—made from reeds that grow only in Nagorno-Karabakh have drastically decreased, while their price has tripled.
Canes of Karabakh are a modest, musical note/drawing of attention to the fragility from which the power of the duduk—a more than thousand-year-old instrument—arises.
The group was formed in May 2025, took part in the New Tradition competition of Polish Radio, where it was awarded second prize “for building space, delving into the depths of sound, excellent and conscious broadening of the instruments’ sound, for proportions, harmony, and trance-like quality.”.
The group will give their first performance at the Avant Art Festival in Warsaw.
Their debut album is set to be released in December this year by Rozdroża Centre.
