ICHI (JP/UK)

Artist from Nagoya who redefines the concept of one-man band, combining handmade instruments with everyday objects in spectacular solo performances. ICHI invented unique instruments such as Stilt-bass, Kalilaphone, Balloon-pipes, Hatbox-pedal-drum, Tapumpet, Percussion-shoes and Hattrick-hat, which he complements with steel drums, ping-pong balls, typewriter and toys.
ICHI tours in Japan, UK, Europe and around the world, performing at festivals such as End of the Road, Latitude, Glastonbury, Green Man, Wilderness, Fusion (Berlin), Clockenflap (Hong Kong), Woodford (Australia) and Wordless Music Festival (New York).
His work is supported by personalities such as David Byrne, Steve Lamacq (BBC 6), Don Letts, Lauren Laverne and Cerys Matthews. Deerhoof invited him to joint performances, and in Japan he shares the stage with artists like Asa-Chang & Junray and Shugo Tokumaru. He had an animated series on Japanese television NHK.
As Steve Lamacq says: “What on earth is this?! It’s brilliant!”, and Lauren Laverne adds: “Hilarious & bonkers & brilliant!”
ICHI is also a visual artist and filmmaker, often searching for materials in dumps for his instrumental inventions. He created interactive earth xylophones the size of a human and exhibited in London with musician-artists. He also co-creates the duo ((( On Pa ))) with Rachael Dadd, presenting interactive shows for children. His latest album “Maru” and single “Week” were released by Lost Map (UK) and Sweetdreams Press (Japan).
