The film “Singeli Movement: Greed for Speed,” filmed very closely within the musician community, depicts the scene of super-fast Tanzanian music that engages creators and fans of all ages and genders. Singeli music emerged at the turn of the century in the slums of Mburahati in Dar es Salaam, as Tanzania began implementing capitalist reforms after 40 years of socialist economic construction. Singeli creators come from the first generation to grow up in this new reality. This film illustrates how ambitions and dreams of fame flourish among artists who grew up amidst the clash between the altruism of past socialist times and the competitiveness of capitalist acceleration.
