PÖ (FR/GH)
PÖ is a French-Ghanaian artist who resides between France and Uganda. She is an actress, music producer, vocalist, and DJ, long associated with the Nyege Nyege crew and Hakuna Kulala — labels known for promoting African artists and exploring the East African and Congolese underground electronic scenes.
PÖ’s music is a blend of various genres, inspired by her multicultural life experiences. She draws on many African vocal traditions, with a guttural, raw voice as the dominant element of her performance. She composes soundscapes primarily using her voice, juxtaposing post-punk sounds with rapid rap, metallic industrial, and distorted bass. Her work references both West African pop and song, as well as DIY noise and experimental electronics.
Her debut album “Cociage,” released in March 2023 by Hakuna Kulala, is a composition that combines rap, noise, ambient, and traditional folk. In the same year, she debuted at the OFF Festival in Katowice, which helped increase her popularity. As a member of the electronic pop duo Poko Poko, collaborating with Congolese producer Rey Sapienz, PÖ has gained recognition on the international music scene.
The artist describes her work as an expression of emotions such as jealousy, resentment, hope, and disappointment. “These are the immaterial forces that animate us, literally moving our soul and motivating the actions of our lives. These are feelings that express themselves without any filters, in the form of singing, growling, screaming,” PÖ said in an interview.
