Piotr Kurek (PL)
Piotr Kurek is a Warsaw-based musician, multi-instrumentalist, and composer whose work includes both solo projects and numerous collaborations. Known for the remarkable range of his musical style and artistic preferences, he began his musical journey in Lublin, playing various instruments and exploring genres from garage rock to gabber.
His work is characterized by diversity – from exotic soundscapes to minimalist compositions. In Kurek’s music, vocal elements often appear as instrumental structures, as well as combinations of traditional music and experimental jazz. Traditional and folk music significantly influenced Kurek, especially during his upbringing in Lublin, where he participated in numerous folk events.
“I think I went through fascinations with all the subcultures of my growing-up years and naturally the music associated with them,” he recalled in an interview with czaskultury.pl.
In his recent albums, such as “Peach Blossom” and “Smartwoods,” one can hear acoustic and digital vocal harmonies, MIDI instruments, and references to Baroque compositions. Both albums have resonated widely both in Poland and worldwide, receiving excellent reviews on sites such as Pitchfork, Quietus, Boomkat, and in The Wire magazine. Kurek has performed at many festivals, including Unsound, CTM, OFF, Elevate, and UH Fest, and has participated in numerous tours across Europe and North America.
