PHELIMUNCASI (SA)

Phelimuncasi, formed in 2012 in Umlazi, Durban, is a Gqom vocal trio consisting of twin sisters Makan Nana and Khera, along with Malathon. Their music, deeply rooted in the South African toyi-toyi tradition, combines rhythmic chanting with powerful, dense Gqom sounds. Their 2020 album, released by Nyege Nyege Tapes, is a retrospective of six years of work, distinguished by its mantra-like singing, spoken word in Isizulu, and an intense sense of liberation. Phelimuncasi pushes the boundaries of the genre they helped define.
