MOE (NOR) + Ikuro Takahashi (JP)
The Norwegian rock duo met with the legendary psychedelic drummer Ikuro Takahashi during one of their tours in Japan. This meeting resulted in a collaboration that has now moved to European stages, bringing the drummer back after many years.
MoE is a duo consisting of Guro S. Moe and Håvard Skaset, founded in 2008. Their style is hard to classify but draws inspiration from bands like Suicide and DNA. They explored the boundaries of free jazz with saxophonist Mette Rasmussen, performed with Keiji Haino, and collaborated with Lasse Marhaug. MoE has become one of the most avant-garde DIY bands in Europe, touring in places such as China, Japan, Vietnam, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia. Their discography includes albums “Oslo Janus” and collaborative projects like “Capsaicin” with Lasse Marhaug and “Tolerancia Piccante” with Mette Rasmussen.
Ikuro Takahashi, born in 1957, is one of the most renowned drummers on the Japanese psychedelic and experimental scene. He was a member of the legendary band Fushitsusha and significantly influenced the Japanese music scene in the 80s and 90s, collaborating with groups such as High Rise, Kousokuya, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and Ché-SHIZU. From 2000 to 2017, he worked on the project Anoyo no Dekigoto with butoh dancer Yoko Murono, and since 2017, he has focused on solo projects, prints, and installations.
MoE has collaborated with Takahashi several times in Japan and has already released the album “Painted” (Relative Pitch, 2020) with Mette Rasmussen. Ikuro-San and MoE are currently working on a new release recorded in Sapporo in November 2023. The material is based on a mix of improvisation and newly developed compositions.
