BIG|BRAVE (CA)
Hailing from Montreal, the band was founded in 2012 by Robin Wattie (vocals, guitar), Mathieu Bernard Ball (guitar), and Louis-Alexandre Beauregard (drums). Initially, they created minimalist folk music, but their sound quickly evolved into slow, saturated compositions of experimental doom metal. After Beauregard’s departure in 2018, Tasy Hudson took over as the band’s current drummer.
Stylistically, BIG|BRAVE combines elements of traditional folk techniques with modern deconstruction of guitar music. Distinguishing themselves with a unique instrumental setup—two guitars and drums without the use of a bass—their music is described as “massive minimalism,” where gain, feedback, and amplitude are key elements. They draw inspiration from bands such as Swans, Fire! Orchestra, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, as well as the works of H. M. Górecki and Arvo Pärt.
BIG|BRAVE has performed at many prestigious festivals, including ESNS Eurosonic Noorderslag (NL), Enjoy Jazz Festival (DE), Garana Jazz Fest (RO), Katowice JazzArt Festival (PL), and Soundrive Festival (PL). Their discography includes albums: “Feral Verdure” (2014), “Au De La” (2015), “Ardor” (2017), “A Gaze Among Them” (2019), “VITAL” (2021), “Leaving None But Small Birds” (2021, in collaboration with The Body), “Nature Morte” (2023), and the upcoming album “A Chaos Of Flowers” (2024), which will be released by Thrill Jockey Records.
Speaking about her approach to the lyrics on the latest album “A Chaos Of Flowers,” Robin Wattie notes: “I discovered that most poems from folk traditions or in the public domain seem to be by men – to which I could not quite relate. In my search, I rediscovered some of my favorite works and poets.” Her interpretation of poetry from artists around the world, especially women, explores the chaos and confusion that alienation breeds in the psyche of those marginalized by society.
