Aunty Rayzor (NG)
A Nigerian afro-hip-hop singer and songwriter from Lagos, Aunty Rayzor has gained recognition as one of the greatest talents on the African rap scene.
She began writing music at the age of nine, encouraged by her piano-playing mother. As a child, she would come home from school and compete with her sister, creating verses and choruses in exchange for candy. Over time, Bisola Olugbenga evolved into Aunty Rayzor.
“My pen is my razor and the razor is me,” she said in an interview when asked about the origin of her stage name.
She publishes music with the Hakuna Kulala label and performs at the Nyege Nyege Festival. She is a versatile artist, singing in both Yoruba and English. Her music is a blend of trap, R&B, hip-hop, pop, grime, and dancehall, often featuring wandering synthesizer melodies and heavily swinging beats reminiscent of late British garage and early grime, accelerated to 160 bpm. Aunty Rayzor’s compositions also feature strong bass beats, guitar loops, and trap snares, creating a solid rhythmic foundation that paves the way for her phenomenal vocal technique.
Her achievements include a long list of awards and collaborations with some of Nigeria’s top artists. On her debut album “Viral Wreckage” for Hakuna Kulala from Kampala, she sang over beats from producers like Scotch Rolex, Kabeaushé, Slimcase, Debmaster, and Brazilian funk producer DJ Cris Fontedofun. The single “Kuku Corona,” released during the pandemic, became an unofficial national anthem.
