Shot very close to the musician community, the film ‘Singeli Movement: Greed for Speed’ depicts a scene of super-fast Tanzanian music that engages creators and fans of all ages and genders. Singeli music was born at the turn of the century in the Mburahati slums of Dar es Salaam, when Tanzania began to implement its first capitalist reforms after 40 years of building a socialist economy. The makers of Singles come from the first generation to grow up in this new reality. This film shows how ambition and dreams of fame blossom in artists who grew up in the clash between the altruism of past socialist times and the competitiveness of capitalist acceleration.
