Max Richter Sleep (+Phew / Oren Ambarchi / Jim O’Rourke – Patience Soup)
Max Richter Sleep dir. by Natalie Johns, UK, 2019 (1 hour 39 minutes)
“This is my personal lullaby to a frenetic world. It’s a manifesto for a slower pace of existence.” – These are the words that come from the film’s director. The film centres around an outdoor concert in Los Angeles, as well as concerts in Berlin, New York and Paris. Diving into the life and process of the artist, we explore the process of creating the critically acclaimed 8-hour opus ‘Sleep’. Directed by Emmy-nominated and award-winning South African Natalie Johns, the groundbreaking and visual portrait reflects the contemplative essence of Richter’s work. Performing Sleep requires unprecedented stamina on the part of the musicians and open-minded sensitivity on the part of the audience.
